Barrie Colts Week 7 Recap. #OHL

The Barrie Colts are coming out of week 7 of the OHL season with a 9-7-1-0 record which has them in 4th place in the Central Division.

The team had a pair of games this past week. They started off Thursday in Sarnia and finished up the week in Oshawa. Here is a look at those games, with additional notes.

Game 16 VS Sarnia Sting.
Barrie kicked off the week at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia VS the Sting.

Colt's starting goalie: Maksim Zhukov.

The 1st period was mostly uneventful but evenly matched. Barrie got a couple chances on the man advantage but were unable to score on Sting goaltender Ethan Langevin. The 1st period would end 0-0 (not scoreless, 0-0 is a score..) Barrie outshot Sarnia 9-8 through 20 minutes.

Sarnia came out to start the 2nd period hard and made the Colts pay early in the period. Hugo Leufvenius scored the first goal of the night just before the 5:00 mark of the period. The goal was Hugo's 7th of the season and Adam Ruzicka earned an assist. Sarnia was up 1-0.

The next 9 minutes were back and forth hockey with each team exchanging chances and getting looks on the power play. Neither team could capitalize until the 13:46 mark when Luke Bignell scored his 4th of the season, assisted by Sam Rhodes and Aidan Brown to tie the game 1-1.

Barrie got a couple more looks on the power-play but could not find the back of the net. The 2nd would end in a 1-1 tie.

At the 3:28 mark of the 3rd, Hugo Leufvenius scored his 2nd goal of the night to put Sarnia back in front, 2-1.

The teams would continue to take penalties but neither were able to get a goal with the man advantage. At 17:28, Aidan Brown scored his 2nd of the season with a beautiful shot to tie the game 2-2. Matej Pekar and Joey Keane both added assists.

Barrie would press late in regulation and get a couple more shots but couldn't score before the end of regulation. The game would need overtime.

Sarnia got some looks early but Maksim Zhukov was ready for them all. Then, 3:36 mark of OT Lucas Chiodo would score a beautiful goal late in a shift to give the Colts the 3-2 win.

The goal was Chiodo's team leading 11th goal of the season. Matej Pekar and Joey Keane again added assists.

Colts win 3-2.

NOTES:
  • Barrie could not score on 8 power play opportunities. They did at least kill off all 4 penalty-kills.
  • Aidan Brown (1G,1A), Joey Keane (2A) and Matej Pekar (2A) all had 2 point nights.
  • Colts out-shot Sting 33-28.
  • Maksim Zhukov made 26 saves to get his 6th win of the season.

Game 17 VS Oshawa Generals.
Barrie would finish the week off in Oshawa to face the Generals and, well.. it wasn't pretty.

Colt's starting goalie: Maksim Zhukov.

This game even started ugly. Danil Antropov scored his 5th of the season just 21 seconds into regulation. Oshawa took an early 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, Nick Wong would take a hooking penalty but the Colts only managed to generate one shot on goal with the man advantage.

At 10:02 Giovanni Vallati scored his 2nd of the year to increase the Generals lead to 2-0. Shortly after, Matej Pekar took a high-sticking penalty which resulted in a power-play goal by Nando Eggenberger to put Oshawa up 3-0.

The 1st ended with Oshawa up 3-0. Rough start for the Colts, getting out-shot heavily, 16-4.

Hop of the Colts getting back into the game died early when Eric Henderson scored his 8th of the season just 1:34 into the 2nd. Generals lead 4-0 and that would be the final score.

Barrie got some looks on the man advantage through the 2nd but couldn't get anything going.

The final period was a mess. Towards the end of the game especially, you could tell that Barrie was frustrated. Joey Keane took a roughing call at 16:10 which turned into Ben Hawerchuk going after Nando Eggenberger. Nando wanted no part of Ben, and Ben grabbed him and threw him down, also knocking over a linesman. With Eggenberger down, Hawerchuck just started throwing punches. His actions resulted in him getting a 2:00 minute minor for instigating, 5:00 for fighting a game misconduct for fighting in the final 5:00 minutes of regulation. Expect the OHL to suspend him. He should receive 2 games for fighting in last 5:00 minutes of regulation. He could get an additional 2 games based on the fact some fans in attendance say he made an "obscene gesture" leaving the ice. In April of last year, Givani Smith was suspended for 2 games for "flipping off" the Soo Greyhounds bench. Wouldn't be unrealistic to think that, if the League feels Eggberger wasn't fighting back (and, it didn't look like he was) that he could get additional time for that. With Hawerchuk's history, I wouldn't be surprised to see him take an 8 to 10 game suspension.

Colts lose 4-0.

NOTES:
  • Barrie served 9 minor penalties and Oshawa scored on 2 power-plays. Barrie went 0 for 4 with the man advantage.
  • Zhukov made 33 saves.
  • Oshawa out shot Barrie 37 to 34.

Observations through week 7.
With the likelihood of Hawerchuk missing some time, the Colts will need to figure out a way to fill his spot. He has been one of the teams top scorers this season so it will not be an easy spot to fill.

12 power-plays this week and the Colts couldn't get a single goal with the man advantage. The team may want to consider juggling lines a little. If they are going to continue to take so many penalties, they have to make up for it with a stronger power-play. Luckily, the team has had strong goaltending from Maksim Zhukov who continues to shoulder most of the work load in goal.

Zachary Magwood scored his 1st pro goal with the Milwaukee Admirals this week! Which resulted in the arena raining teddy bears.
The goal felt so good that he decided to score his 2nd later on that game.
