Barrie Colts Week 3 Recap. #OHL

The Barrie Colts are coming out of week 3 of the OHL season with a 3-3-1-0 record which has them in 4th place in the Central Division.

Barrie went 1-2-0-0 this past week with a win over Kingston and losses to Mississauga and Ottawa. Here is a quick breakdown of each game, as well as some thoughts and how some Colts alumni did around the NHL.

Colts starting goalie: Jet Greaves

Before the game started it was announced that Owen Tippett and Michael Little of the Steelheads were suspended by the OHL for an incident that happened late in their game against Kingston on September, 30th. Little was suspended for 2 games and Tippett was suspended indefinitely. The league still hasn't announced the duration of his suspension.

Rookie goalie for the Colts, Jet Greaves go his first start of the season for the Ponies. A pretty tough start for Jet allowing a goal 14 seconds into the game on his first shot of the night. Cole Carter got the goal which was his 4th of the season. Trout led early.

The Barrie Colts were heavily out-shot 22-13 in the 1st period. That didn't stop them from scoring the first goal of the afternoon at the 9:09 mark when Ben Hawerchuk scored on the power-play. The goal was Ben's 4th of the year with assists going to Joey Keane and Lucas Chiodo.

Ottawa would score a pair of goals before the end of the 1st period. Kody Clark scored the 67's first goal of the night and Marco Rossi scored 20 seconds later. Ottawa led 2-1 after the 1st.

Barrie came out solid in the 1st period of the game. Tyson Foerster scored the only goal of the period just before the 6 minute mark. The goal was the rookies 1st OHL goal and put the Ponies up 1-0. Tyler Tucker got an assist on the goal.

Kingston had a stronger 2nd period, out-shooting Barrie 18-8. Just past the 13 minute mark, Jason Robertson scored his 7th of the season to tie the game 1-1. Less than a minute after, Tyler Tucker scored his 3rd to regain the lead. Ben Hawerchuk and Ryan Suzuki got assists. The period ended with Barrie up 2-1.

3:30 into the 3rd, Robertson scored his second of the night to tie the game 2-2. A little more than a minute later, the Colts responded again with a quick Joey Keane goal to regain the lead 3-2. This would be the game winner. Chiodo would add an insurance goal late in the period to give the Colts a 4-2 win.

Colts win 4-2.

NOTES:
  • Tyler Tucker (1G,1A) and Ryan Suzuki (2A) both had 2 point games.
  • Tyson Foerster scored his 1st OHL goal.
  • Maksim Zhukov made 38 saves.
  • Jason Willms won 16 of 27 draws.
  • Colts went 1 for 5 on the man advantage and killed off all 3 penalties.

Observations through week 3.
Colts score 8 goals this past week through 3 games which was a drop from their 11 in two games the previous week. They still are tied for most goals this season with Saginaw. Both teams have 31 goals on the season.

Barrie has served 112 penalty minutes through 3 weeks. That is the most league wide. Kingston and Sudbury have the 2nd most, both with 92 minutes.

St.Louis Blues prospect Tyler Tucker scored his 3rd goal of the season which matched his career best from last season. Tucker has been solid for Barrie and at this rate will crush his point total from last season.

Maksim Zhukov got 2 starts this week and overall looked great. It still feels like he will be the main starter for the team, though both Kai and Jet have played well and will both still fight for that top spot.

Ryan Suzuki leads the OHL in points with 15. 11 of those points are assists which is also leading the league and 5 of those are on the power-play which, again, is the most in the O.

Joey Keane (17PIM) and Tyler Tucker (18PIM) have spent a lot of time in the penalty box. Only Daniel Walker of North Bay has more penalty minutes with 23.

Joey Keane is a +9 which is the 2nd highest +/- in the league.

Ryan Suzuki is riding a 7 game point streak this season. He has 4 goals and 11 assists during his streak.

The Colts top line to Pekar, Suzuki and Chiodo are still dominating, posting a total of 36 points in 7 games.

Maksim Zhukov's 0.923 SAV% is 5th best in the league.
