The New Guys. #OHL #Colts

During the OHL trade deadline, the Colts picked up Jason Smith from the Mississauga Steelheads and Robert Proner from the Saginaw Spirit. It will be hard to fill the void left by Cameron Lizotte, Cordell James and Matt Brassard but the young ponies are stocking the shelves for the future and intend to finish the season strong.

Let's dig in a little and get to know the new guys:

Jason Smith: (C) 19 years old, 5' 8" 165lbs (76kg), Left Shot

Jason was drafted by the Steelheads in 2013 in the 8th round (144th overall) and played there for two full seasons before being traded to the Colts.

During his time in Mississauga, he only put in 11 goals in 145 games.

To be honest, I looked all over the place and Jason remains a mystery. He's dropped the gloves 6 times in the OHL over his career, including Colt's Hawerchuk.

Robert Proner: (D) 17 years old, 6' 2" 212lbs (96kg), Left Shot

Proner was a 30th selection in the OHL 2015 draft. He's a massive human for only being 17. He was promoted in the spring of 2016 to play for the Spirit after putting in 29 points in 47 games and amassing an astonishing 153 PIMs.

Proner is a hard worker who can and will use his size to gain possession deep in his own zone. His shot is hard but lacks some accuracy which will surely come from time.

The Colts - although rebuilding- have added two tough bodies who will hopefully open up some ice and contribute to the PK regularly.

The OHL scouting report says:
“Robert is a big, tough and versatile defender that is very hard to play against. He has very good mobility for someone his size and closes gaps well to take away time and space with his mobility and active stick. He has a very heavy shot from the point that he gets on the net with regularity. Defensively, he is one of the hardest players in the age group to play against. He hits like a truck in the corners, never turning away from contact. He has good puck skills for a player of his size and makes a solid first pass.”
